Following up on the 2018 workshop on dangerous goods transport in Shanghai, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) successfully organised a further experience exchange on this subject in Europe, from 26 to 30 August this year. A delegation from China, including CAAC and cargo operators, visited EASA in Cologne and Cargolux in Luxembourg.

The safe handling of cargo containing dangerous goods being essential to the trade relationship between the EU and China, the objective of this activity was to increase the cooperation and exchange of information, experience and practices for safety management of dangerous goods by air transportation between the two regions.

The activity started in Cologne (Germany) at EASA’s headquarters, where dangerous goods experts from the authorities presented European and Chinese regulations, and oversight and inspection of foreign operators. Practicalities and challenges of dangerous goods transportation were presented by experts representing industry stakeholders, who also gave insights into their safety management system (SMS) implementation, among others.

The second part of the experience exchange took place in Luxembourg, at the premises of operator Cargolux. The delegation visited the cargo centre warehouse and was given presentations by Luxembourg’s CAA and cargo operators, showcasing standards and procedures in practice in Europe on a member state level.

The activity was attended by representatives from CAAC, EASA, UK CAA, Luxembourg Direction de l’Aviation Civile (DAC), IATA, Air China Cargo, YTO Cargo Airlines, China Southern Airlines, KLM Cargo, Cargolux, and Luxair Cargo.
