Extending EASA and CAAC’s well-established cooperation on helicopter safety, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) organised a week-long activity dedicated to safety management of helicopter operations in China. From 2 to 5 September, European and Chinese experts visited operators in Kunming and Deyang, followed by a concluding workshop on 6 September in Beijing. The European experts presented accident case studies and discussed associated safety solutions with the participants. Each visit was concluded with a tour of the operator’s facilities.

On the final day of the activity the experts presented their conclusions and recommendations from the visits during a workshop focusing on safety management. Furthermore, best practices were shared in Safety Management System (SMS) implementation as well as different tools available to support smaller operators’ SMS.

Following the useful exchanges throughout the week, it was concluded that there is good scope to continue cooperation in helicopter safety and other areas of general aviation between China and Europe. The stakeholders participating in the activity included EASA, CAAC, China Academy for Civil Aviation Science and Technology, Civil Aviation Management Institute of China and several representatives from European and Chinese industry.
