On 20 and 21 September, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) held a workshop focusing on air routes network functional design and operational concepts, aiming to exchange experiences of the concepts applied in Europe and discuss initiatives in China as well as to highlight the constraints and solutions being studied or implemented in both regions. The workshop brought together close to 200 participants from government, industry and academic institutes.

On the first day of the event, ATMB and EUROCONTROL Network Manager presented on the strategic planning and ATM challenges in China and Europe respectively. EUROCONTROL also presented the European Network Operations Plan. On the second day, presentations were given on the European route network improvement plan, Free Route Airspace (FRA) implementation, and the workshop was concluded with presentations by air operators to share the airline expectations in China and Europe.

The main workshop contributors were ATMB, EUROCONTROL Network Manager, ROMATSA, Air China, and KLM. The event resulted in the exchange of useful and valid references for the continued development of air route network functional design and operational concepts, and the authorities on both sides expressed the willingness to continue cooperation in this domain.
