Continuing the series of EU-China exchanges in the domain of Air Traffic Management (ATM), the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) held an online workshop on Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) operation and dealing with risks caused by abnormality of the ionosphere. This event was held on 30 August and brought together European and Chinese experts sharing insights on research, practices and experience on the subject.

The workshop started with a presentation by the German Air Navigation Service Provider DFS, on the GBAS CAT II approaches that went into operation in July 2022 at Frankfurt Airport. The Civil Aviation AIR Traffic CONTROL Technology Equipment Development then presented the civil aviation application of GBAS technology in China. Finally, China Electronics Technology Company (CETC) Galaxy BEIDOU Technology shared its insight on the monitoring and assessment of ionospheric risks and the study of mitigation methods, as well as the study of GNSS compatible interoperability in GBAS.

Close to 100 representatives of authorities and industry were in attendance. A lively Q&A on expert level further contributed to the activity’s aim of increasing mutual awareness and appreciation of the development of the GBAS operations in Europe and China.
