On 6 and 7 March, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) organised a workshop on flight planning. Experts from authorities and industry convened in Beijing to share best practices and insights on the flight planning processes and systems in place in Europe and China, which support the potential of innovation that benefits all aviation stakeholders in terms of safety, capacity and environmental impact.

The workshop was opened by the EU-China APP project team, the CAAC Operation Supervisory Center (OSC) and EUROCONTROL, and the first day programme covered a range of topics including air traffic flow prediction and capacity assessment, traffic forecasting processes and methodologies, pre-flight planning management in China and centralised processing of flight planning, and flight plan updates and monitoring, among others. On the second day, the focus of the discussion was on interoperability technologies (regulatory, operational and technical aspects) and the perspective of airlines on flight planning.

In addition to CAAC OSC and EUROCONTROL, presentations were delivered by the Civil Aviation University of China (CAUC), Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of CAAC, IATA, NAVCHINA, KLM, Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and Xiamen Airlines. The workshop ended with a lively panel discussion on the future of flight planning information exchange. Participants to the workshop found the event very informative and clarifying the different concepts and challenges for flight planning in Europe and China, which paves the way to extended discussions in the near future.
