Seeking to achieve optimal efficiency and capacity in air operations, authorities and airlines from the EU and China gathered on 27 and 28 March to discuss vertical and lateral flight efficiency. This workshop in Beijing, organised by the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project, was led by EUROCONTROL and the Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of CAAC.

The workshop started with presentations addressing vertical efficiency, including flight level orientation scheme and flight level allocation schemes (FLAS), planning technical theory related to route network efficiency, FLAS operation in China, vertical management and flight level use by airlines. After a presentation on the predictable cruise Flight Level allocation in high-density Upper Airspace, the second day programme focused on lateral efficiency, with elaboration on performance indicators and regulations, parameters and improvement measures and the perspective of airlines. Throughout the workshop, participants made good use of the opportunity to ask questions to the presenters leading to lively discussion and exchanges between the European and Chinese experts.

Contributions to this workshop in the form of presentations were made by EUROCONTROL, ATMB, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, and Finnair. It was concluded that the event had been very useful in better understanding of challenges as well as possibilities for further increasing flight efficiency, and participants expressed the wish to stay connected for follow-up discussions and cooperation.
