On 27 and 28 November, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) organised a Colour vision testing experience exchange for EASA and CAAC medical experts. This event in Cologne served as a follow-up of a workshop on Safety Management Systems (SMS) within Aero-Medical Centres (AeMCs) held in 2019.

The Colour vision testing experience exchange aimed to facilitate dialogue and information exchange between Chinese and European experts, assessing the current status and identifying necessary research or changes to enhance flight safety. Some of the key topics which were discussed included:

• Aligning with ICAO recommendations and relevant EASA and CAAC requirements.

• Adapting to changes in the Aircrew and Air Traffic Control Officers (ATCO) working environment.

• Incorporating recent research findings in colour vision.

• Sharing European and Chinese experiences in colour vision testing.

Offering practical insights into colour vision testing, the delegates to this event also visited an AeMC - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). During this visit, commonly used colour vision testing methods in Europe were presented, such as the anomaloscope and Colour Assessment and Diagnosis (CAD) test. In addition, both EASA and DLR medical experts were given an overview of ongoing Chinese research related to the diagnosis and assessment techniques of occupational colour vision for aircrew and ATCO. Finally, following the fruitful results of this event, EASA and CAAC participants discussed potential topics for future cooperation in the aero-medical domain.
