In May 2019, the EU-China Aviation Partnership Project (APP) held a first workshop on Trajectory Based Operations (TBO), sharing initial experiences on how 4D TBO is implemented or demonstrated in Europe and China, as well as exchanging on data link communications. Catching up on the developments since, European and Chinese stakeholders reconvened on 25 and 26 September 2023 to share on TBO demonstrations, experimental verification and their respective implementation roadmaps, and on the development of technical enablers. This workshop was attended by over 140 participants and involved the contributions of the authorities as well as industry.

On the first day, a general overview of TBO operations concept in Europe was provided by SESAR Joint Undertaking. The SESAR Deployment Manager subsequently elaborated the European Plan, after which Maastricht Upper Area Control (MUAC) gave an operational introduction of ATS B2 and ADS-C. On the second day, participants were given an overview of TBO research and application progress in China, as well as multi-aircraft TBO simulation validation, by Aviation Data Communication Corporation (ADCC) and the Air Traffic Management Bureau (ATMB) of CAAC respectively. Airbus, Eurocontrol and SESAR subsequently presented the DIGITS and ADSCENSIO projects and the role of FF-ICE Release 2, after which DFS introduced recent developments in TBO R&D activities and concept development, including their cooperation with NRIEE/LES in China.

Lively question-and-answer sessions took place at this online event. And following the fruitful information exchange, hopes were expressed to continue the successful series of EU-China APP activities in the ATM domain.
